Testimonials from some of our patients

A letter from one of our patients to future patients:

I would like to take a moment to tell you about our experience in choosing a doctor, preparing for the surgery, the surgery, and finally the recovery of a vasectomy reversal.

My husband and I were married in September of 2011.  We knew right away one of the first things as a married couple we wanted to accomplish was to complete a vasectomy reversal, so we would have the opportunity to have a family together.  We began doing some research on the internet.  Not knowing what to except as far as cost or the surgery we were quite confused with all of the different choices.  Prices ranged from $2800 to over $10,000.  Now to be completely honest I wasn’t sure I wanted to go for the least costly but then do we want to spend large amounts on a “maybe”.  We needed to hear from the doctors’ offices.  So after the internet research it was time to complete a couple of phone interviews.  This was very important to me.  I asked my husband to make the calls because he was the one having the surgery. I wanted him to make the choice on who he felt comfortable with.  In late November he started making calls.  The 1st office he called the receptionist answered the line and my husband began to ask her questions about the cost of the procedure, how their office completed the surgery, and the recovery.  The person on the other line did not have many answers and frankly was pretty rude.  The next call was to Dr. Sommers’ office at Midwest Vasectomy Reversals.  Well they say you only have 1 chance to make a 1st impression, I can say this office is spot on.  Mrs. Kathy Sommers’ answered the phone; her tone so nice and inviting.  Kathy was able to answer all the questions my husband had and told him to please call back with any other questions.  We discussed the answers to his questions and came up with a few more.  My husband called the office back and spoke with Kathy a 2nd time.  Just the same as the 1st call, Kathy was very nice and sincere.  She answered all our questions again.  While the cost was not our 1st determining factor when choosing an office it worked out well with Midwest Vasectomy Reversals.  We were able to have a great personal experience at an affordable cost.  We scheduled our procedure for December 29, 2011.  Before the surgery Kathy sent us a health questionnaire and pre-op and post op instructions.  This process was extremely quick and easy.

On the day of the surgery we arrived at Dr. Sommers’ office.  We were greeted by Kathy and made to feel welcome in the office.  Next we had a consultation with Dr. Sommers.  Dr. Sommers explained the procedure in great detail.  He explained what to expect before, during, and after the surgery.  This was very comforting to us especially since Dr. Sommers explained he had been through what my husband was going through. When the procedure began Dr. Sommers numbed the area without the use of a needle. The numbing agent was applied by spraying a fine mist on the area.  The procedure lasted about 3 hours.  My husband said he was comfortable throughout the entire process.  As a wife or partner you may be wondering, what do you do during the 3 hours?  Well Kathy was there to speak with me while I waited and worried about my husband.  She walked me through everything that was going on. This really put me at ease.  I was able to text and talk via phone with my husband throughout the process.  And about mid way through the procedure I was able to leave the office and visit Walgreens across the street from the office. (Very convenient location).  I picked up the antibiotics and pain medicine that had been called in before the procedure and returned to the office.  When I returned my husband had about 15 minutes left.  He came out of the procedure room with Dr. Sommers.  Dr. Sommers then asked me to join them in his office.  He explained how the surgery went and again reviewed the post op instructions.  Dr. Sommers stated he would call the next day to check in and see my husband was doing.  And just was he promised we received a check up call the next day.  My husband experienced swelling for several days after the procedure but was able to handle normal day to day activities.  The bruising and swelling lasted about 8 days for him.  Today 2 weeks after the surgery the stitches have dissolved the swelling is gone and he is back to normal activities.

When deciding to have this procedure done, you have to spend the time and energy in your research.  With that said we cannot recommend Midwest Vasectomy Reversals enough.  We have had the best experience and will hopefully be blessed with a baby.  We would like to express our gratitude to Dr. Sommers, Mrs. Kathy Sommers, and the staff of Midwest Vasectomy Reversals for making this a comfortable experience.  If you have questions please call and speak with Kathy.  This office is more than willing to help before, during, and after the surgery.  Best wishes for a successful experience!!

Sincerely,

Shannon and Keith

From one of our patient's unsolicited feedback on Yelp:

I decided to travel to have a reversal by Dr. Sommers for four reasons: (1) He does reversals every week and I wanted someone who made this operation his specialty. (2) He offered a straightforward procedure with local anesthesia, unlike some others. (3) Besides having less risk, this approach and single-procedure focus keeps his costs down; and it was much less expensive for me to get a $250 flight into St. Louis than to have it performed locally. (4) It was a Christian-owned family enterprise, the kind I like to support.

As for my experience there, Dr. Sommers took his time--he only schedules TWO procedures a day unlike some others who have to fit in three. He, his wife, and his surgical assistant were all very warm and professional, and they have a good follow up procedure. It's now four days later and I have had less pain and swelling than in my vasectomy (though I read that it's different for different men). I scheduled my flight out the following day just in case, but I could have flown out that afternoon.

I decided to travel to have a reversal by Dr. Sommers, and I am SO glad I did. I wish I had found a few more reviews online when I was looking around for a doctor, so I decided to write this one. I also told Dr. Sommers that if anyone wants to contact me about my experience, I'd be glad to answer any questions (contact him for my phone number if you like). All the best!
